SNAFU are not for the faint-hearted. Or, indeed, the average-hearted. In fact, best give them a wide berth if there are any heart defects at all in your family history. Yes, this hardcore punk band, conceived in the dark passageways of Detroit’s apocalyptic underground, are very much here to tear you, your associates, and basically anyone in your zip code a new one.
The acronym stands for Situation Normal All Fucked Up, and the band represent a molotov cocktail of thrash, punk, grind and hardcore. They’re very angry about something (actually, several things), and while it’s not always entirely clear what that is, it is clear that they’re very serious about it. Racking up over a hundred shows a year, SNAFU have completed two East Coast tours, two Midwest tours and two full nationwide tours in their relatively short time together. They’ve shared stages with The Suicide Machines, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Acid Witch and many more besides, and now they’re gearing up for the release of their second album, Present Day Plague - which promises to be heavier and darker than their debut, and “full of enraged mutiny”. So there.
A glance at the track-listing for Present Day Plague should give you a pretty clear idea of what to expect. “Subhuman Scum”, “Snakes Eating Snakes”, “Dead Before Dawn”… this is a band embracing their dark side, and inviting you to do the same.
